I have a part-time teaching practice in Alexander Technique and a full-time career in science. My initial lessons in the technique were taken in response to chronic headaches that developed after a car accident in which I sustained a whiplash injury. I also was interested in how the technique applied to musical performance, in my case playing the piano. I was amazed to see how the technique applied to these different issues and many others besides. The headaches gradually diminished, then vanished, and I was discovering that I could do things at the piano that had been beyond my skills previously. Along the way, I became generally more relaxed (one work colleague told me that I was much nicer to work with after I began my lessons), I reduced my fear of public speaking, I slept much better and I became more resilient to daily pressures. I was fascinated by the technique and its consequences from the beginning of my lessons and I find that my fascination grows with each passing day. The continuing fascination led me to undertake the teacher training course in William Brenner’s training school in Sydney. Alexander Technique has been a life changing experience for me.
