A decade ago I developed a bulging disc in my neck from playing the violin professionally and was recommended surgery. Reticence and a chance encounter with a music colleague who happened to be an Alexander Technique teacher sent me on a whole new pathway of study. My neck problems were resolved when I learnt how to “use” myself, not just anatomically but also with a softer, calmer approach; body and mind being inseparable entities. This led to deep and surprising insights into mastery and creativity in my own practice as a musician, in my teaching and as a parent, golfer and gardener…..
I continue to play the violin and also teach Alexander Technique at the Australian National Academy of Music and the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. My practice now encompasses professional music and sport, preparing people for interviews or speeches, learning how to sit and stand in the workplace and helping introverts cope at work. I am also passionate about helping people gently find freedom from pain or find a greater sense of ease in any activity. Having taught over a hundred young violinists over 30 years I have a deep interest in working with children and their parent(s) or carers to find a quieter nervous system through the balancing of the whole self. I think this is something that is essential for the development of the child.
I work with both individuals and groups of any age , helping to uncover people’s potential to change when finding a balanced self.
